The
adriatic sea, mainly closed, is connected,
or tied to the Jonin sea, and through it,
one can get to to the mid east. Borders of
the Adriatic sea and the Jonin sea are the
gates of Otran, wide only some 75 km between
Italy and Albania.
The
Adriatic sea is mainly shallow. North of Pula,
the depth does not exceed 50 m, south of Pula
to Zadar 100 m (that area durring the ice
age was part of the mainland). In the southern
part of the Adriatic sea the are dramatic
drops in depth (deepest being 1233 m).
The
Adriatic sea is a relatively warm sea - temperatures
do not fall below 11°C. Visibility is great
as well.
Characteristics
of the Croatian coast is the mountainous area
along the coast (mountains along the coast,
except around Zadar and western Istria), while
the Italian coast is flat or much lower.
Sea
currents are warm and flow along the coast
from south to north, and along the Italian
coast, from north to south. Tides are not
emphasized.
The
Croatian coast is considered one of the cleanest
seas in Europe. At the same time, the Italian
coast is somewhat considerably poluted (due
to the polution from the river Po). Luckily,
that polution does not affect the Croatian
coast due to the currents.
